Funding Opportunities
SANBI offers competitive bursary packages for students based on student performance and funding availability.
Bursaries are not guaranteed, and can only be considered once applications for study have been approved by SANBI. A number of funding opportunities exist through which students’ registration fees and living expenses could be covered. Overseas students must please take note that SANBI does not offer funding for travel to South Africa, and they will also be responsible for securing and paying for their own study visas - SANBI and UWC will only provide the necessary confirmation of acceptance letters where appropriate.
There are several programmes through which students can be funded:
The Stanford-South Africa Biomedical Informatics (SSABMI) Training Program expands teaching, training, and research opportunities for individuals interested in the application of informatics technologies to problems in biomedical research.The program is a partnership between the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape Town, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, and Stanford University.
Various funding opportunities exist for health related research for full time students through the Bioinformatics Unit at SANBI of South Africa’s Medical Research Council. In addition, internship funding at the masters is available through a competitive application procedure level. Bursary awards are usually only given to students who will be working under an MRC-funded supervisor.
The NRF has funding available for Masters, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral research. Funding is available through SANBI or directly from the NRF. There are several programmes that differ based upon the background and abilities of the student applying, the associated programmes, and his or her nationality.
Student funding is made available to nodes across the country. Funding for MSc, PhD, and Postdoctoral research is accessible through SANBI.
