SANBI Information:
SANBI is the leading institution and centre of excellence for Bioinformatics in Africa. The University of the Western Cape (UWC), through SANBI, has pioneered the introduction of this field in the continent and is internationally recognized for shaping health biotechnology outputs in SA.
SANBI and UWC have been awarded the only South African DST/NRF Research Chair in Bioinformatics and Human Health. The Chair activities focus on research into the molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, and others, as well as cancers and diabetes.
We guarantee to provide our students with:

• the opportunity to actively participate in prestigious international research projects through collaborations with some of the worlds leading laboratories and international research groups;

• good bursaries (PhD R80,000, MS R45,000, Honours: R 20,000 per year);
• home internet access (subject to academic performance);
• opportunities to attend international conferences and to undertake visits to our overseas collaborators (subject to academic performance).
Eligible students should have a relevant background in any of the following disciplines: biology, biotechnology, medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science or similar. Computer programming experience is welcome, but is not an essential prerequisite.
