.
Organized by: DDMRI, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and MRC Pathogen Bioinformatics Unit, SANBI, University of Western Cape, South Africa.
.
Location and Dates: Durban, South Africa 13 to 15 of August 2007
.
Workshop Background: “This workshop is designed for Masters and PhD students with little or no previous experience in sequence analyses. Students will be introduced to basic techniques in molecular biology and molecular genetics. Basic principles and techniques used in molecular phylogenetics and phylogenetic inference such as sequence editing, alignment, construction of unrooted and rooted trees, parsimony, evolutionary models, and maximum likelihood will be discussed followed by practical exercises. The use of HIV sequence databases will also be discussed.
Students working on biological problems other than HIV are welcome to attend this course but the theory and practical sessions will focus on HIV related problems. The principles to be discussed are widely applicable beyond the HIV field.”
